Yorkshire Ripper ForumsOn Saturday, 25th June, 1977, Peter Sutcliffe met with some regular drinking companions for a night out in Bradford.
After dropping his friends home at the end of the night Peter Sutcliffe headed for Chapeltown in Leeds.
Sixteen-year-old Jayne MacDonald was also having a night out in Leeds' Chapeltown. Jayne MacDonald had earlier kissed her father goodbye and left their home in Chapeltown for an evening with friends at the Hofbräuhaus, a German-style ‘Bierkeller’ which was located in the city centre.
Jayne MacDonald was not a prostitute. She had started her first job as a sales assistant in the shoe department of a local shop.
Jayne MacDonald met a male during the evening and left with him at 10.30pm. They headed towards Leeds' Briggate with a group. They enjoyed a late supper - leading Jayne to miss the last bus home. Jayne's new friend took her to his home to see if his sister could give Jayne a lift home. After finding the house empty they headed towards Jayne's home in Scott Hall Avenue.
The youngsters parted company at the gates of St James' Hospital at around 1.30am. Jayne attempted to call a taxi from a kiosk on Harehills Road. Having received no answer Jayne started to walk home.
Surprisingly, her route took her past the Gaiety Public House where Emily Jackson was seen and where Marcella Claxton reported that she had seen Peter Sutcliffe following her attack.
As she reached the adventure playground on the Chapeltown Road Jayne was attacked, and murdered, by Peter Sutcliffe. In his usual style Sutcliffe rained hammer blows to Jayne's head. He also stabbed her more than twenty times in the chest and back. Jayne's skirt was disarranged and her jumper was pulled up to expose her breasts.
Two youngsters found Jaynes MacDonald's body at 9.45am that morning.
At this point Chief Constable Ronald Gregory appointed his most senior detective, Assistant Chief Constable George Oldfield, to oversee all the Ripper investigations.
Reports suggest that Chief Constable Ronald Gregory wanted Assistant Chief Constable George Oldfield to reassure the public that Jayne MacDonald was not a prostitute and that the killer had murdered her by "mistake" because of the area she was in, and the fact that she was out at that time of the morning. George Oldfield did convey this message to the public.
Jayne MacDonald lived just a few doors away from Wilma McCann.

Patricia Atkinson - Yorkshire Ripper Victim |

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsPatricia Atkinson was a 32-year-old divorcee who had three children living with her in Bradford. The flat was on the outskirts of Bradford's red-light area.
On Saturday, 23rd April, 1977, Patricia, or Tina, as she was more commonly known, had a night out in Manningham.
Patricia was well known in the pubs around Manningham and had a reputation for drinking heavily. At 11pm Patricia was seen heading towards Church Street.
Just after this Patricia was picked up by kerb-crawling Peter Sutcliffe. They agreed to 'do business' and Patricia Atkinson took Peter Sutcliffe back to her small flat.
Records show that Peter Sutcliffe hung up his coat as he entered the flat. Sutcliffe then retrieved a hammer from the coat pocket and inflicted four vicious blows to Patricia's head. Sutcliffe then took Patricia to the bedroom and put her onto the bed, where he ripped open her jacket and blouse. He then pulled down her jeans and panties.
Sutcliffe then proceeded to stab Patricia with a chisel, first in the stomach, then in the back, before returning to the stomach.
As Sutcliffe left he pulled Patricia's jeans up and threw bed linen over her body. Sutcliffe then made his way back home in Tanton Crescent.
The murder scene in Patricia Atkinson's flat produced vital evidence:
Sutcliffe had left his size 7 boot print on a bed sheet. These would later prove to be the same as those left at the scene of Emily Jackson's murder.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsOn Thursday, 21st April, 1977, Debbie Schlesinger had enjoyed a night out in Leeds with best fried Pat Power and a group of friends.
Shortly after arriving at houses in Craigside Walk Debbie Schlesinger was stabbed in the heart. She died in the doorway of the Conservative Club.
At the time Debbie's murder was not linked to the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutclliffe.
Many years later a dedicated police officer found a worksheet for Peter William Sutcliffe, provided by his employers, T. & W. H. Clark (Holdings Ltd), showing that late in the same afternoon he delivered empty axle squares and a front axle to a company called Kirkstall Forge.
Its premises were less than a hundred yards from Craigside Walk.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsOn Thursday, 21st April, 1977, best friends Pat Power and Debbie Schlesinger were with a wider group of friends who went into Leeds for a night out.
Debbie Schlesinger was only eighteen-years-old, worked in a supermarket and still lived with her parents on the Hawksworth Estate in Horsforth, which is situated on the road from Leeds to Bingley.
After the night out the group took a bus home. After getting off the bus Pat and Debbie walked up to the houses in Craigside Walk. When they got to Pat’s house Debbie continued on towards her house, which was only fifty yards from Pat's.
Before Debbie got to her house a man appeared and stabbed her through the heart. She managed to run towards the Conservative Club. Debbie Schlesinger collapsed and died in the doorway of the Conservative Club. Debbie's attacker followed her to the doorway before making off.
The witnesses at the scene were able to give a clear description of the attacker:
- He was a white man
- He had dark hair and a beard
- He was about thirty years old
- He was five feet six inches tall
Detective Superintendent Jim Hobson was to take the lead on the murder inquiry. DS Jim Hobson had led the unsuccessful hunt for Tracy Browne’s attacker.
The police believed the murderer was somebody local and that they would be caught quickly. This was not the case - on both counts.
Pat Power thought the murderer could be the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, and raised her concerns with the police. Pat was told that the Yorkshire Ripper only worked in red-light areas, so they didn't consider him as a suspect.
Many years later a policeman trying to bring closure for some of the families found some vital paperwork.
He found a worksheet for Peter William Sutcliffe, provided by his employers, T. & W. H. Clark (Holdings Ltd), showing that late in the afternoon he delivered empty axle squares and a front axle to a company called Kirkstall Forge.
Its premises were less than a hundred yards from Craigside Walk.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsBarbara Ann Young, 29, lived on the Happy Days caravan site at Hatfield, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Barbara Young had two young children and supported her family by working as a prostitute.
At 8.45pm on Tuesday, 22 March, 1977, Barbara was found in Broxholme Lane in Hatfield. Although having serious head injuries, Barbara Ann Young was conscious when she was found. She told a friend that a punter had led her to an alleyway between Broxholme Lane and Christchurch Road, where he had attacked her.
Barbara was put to bed by a friend. Unfortunately she died from her appalling injuries.
Broxholme Lane was close to the M1 motorway, which was littered with lorry parks and cheap hotels.
It has been suggested that Peter Sutcliffe knew this area well due to his various driving jobs.
Barbara's post-mortem revealed that her skull was fractured, causing a massive haemorrhage.
South Yorkshire Police launched a murder inquiry. Reports suggest that South Yorkshire Police didn't pass the details of Barbara's horrific attack on to their colleagues in Leeds. Barbara's injuries were very similar to those of Wilma McCann, Emily Jackson and Irene Richardson.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsIrene Osborne was born into a large working-class Glaswegian family – she had six sisters and three brothers. The family moved around with Irene having spells in London and Blackpool, before being in Leeds in 1977.
Irene also had two children who entered the care system and were eventually fostered.
After arriving in Blackpool in 1970 Irene met and married George Richardson. Irene worked for Pontins, George was a carpenter. In 1975 Irene left home for London - without telling her husband. George Richardson found Irene in London, where they tried to patch up their marriage.
After a few months, Irene disappeared again. George didn't try to find her this time.
In 1975 Irene Richardson was homeless in Chapeltown, Leeds.
In the short time before her attack, 28-year-old Irene was staying in a bed and breakfast on Cowper Street in the heart of Leeds’ red-light district. On the night of Saturday, 5th February, 1977, Irene left the bed and breakfast at 11.15pm to search for business.
The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, was trawling the streets of Leeds in his white Ford Corsair. Irene Richardson got into his car not far away from the Gaiety Public House. Sutcliffe drove to Soldiers’ Field in Roundhay Park – the same place where he viciously attacked Marcella Claxton.
Irene Richardson got out of the car and went to urinate before having sex. As she did so Sutcliffe attacked her with a hammer. He then proceeded to rip open her blouse and stab her in the abdomen and neck. Irene's throat was so savagely attacked that her larynx was exposed.
After masturbating and positioning Irene's body Sutcliffe made his escape.
At 7.30 on the morning of Sunday, 6th February, a jogger found Irene Richardson’s mutilated body.
Detective Chief Superintendent Hobson, who had replaced Chief Superintendent Hoban in the Eastern Crime Area, investigated the crime and established the incident room at Millgarth Police Station, Leeds.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsOn Saturday, 28th August, 1976, housewife Maureen Hogan went for a night out in Bradford.
Maureen Hogan spent time in the Europa Club before she moved on to the Pentagon nightclub in the heart of Bradford.
Maureen left the Pentagon nightclub at approximately 1.30am to start the walk home.
Maureen Hogan was viciously attacked and left in a shop doorway. A milkman found her unconscious some five hours later. Maureen was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where examination showed she had severe head injuries and multiple stab wounds to her abdomen.
Although Maureen's injuries were very similar to those sustained by Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson, this attack was not considered to be one of the Yorkshire Ripper's.
Maureen, 39, survived the attack but could not provide a description of her attacker.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsOn Sunday, 9th May, 1976, Sutcliffe decided to head into Leeds. At this time he owned a white Ford Corsair.
Sutcliffe drove around the Chapeltown area of Leeds searching for his next victim.
At approximately 4am the following morning Sutcliffe came across twenty-year-old Marcella Claxton.
At the time of her attack Marcella was unemployed and living in one of the run-down terraces of back-to-back houses off Roundhay Road. This was also very close to the Gaiety Public House.
Marcella Claxton had spent the evening at a West Indian drinking club. Sutcliffe approached Marcella Claxton in Spencer Place and asked if she was 'doing business'. She told Sutcliffe she wasn't a prostitute and instead asked for a lift home.
Sutcliffe drove Marcella to Soldiers’ Field in Roundhay Park and offered her £5 to get out of the car and undress for sex on the grass.
Marcella said that she needed to urinate and went to hide behind a clump of nearby bushes. A few minutes later Sutcliffe attacked her from behind with blows to the head. As she was dazed she registered the fact that her attacker had black hair, beard and moustache.
Marcella recalls seeing Sutcliffe masturbating as he watched her bleeding on the ground.
Sutcliffe gave Marcella a £5 note and warned her not to call the police. Marcella made it to a telephone box and called an ambulance.
Marcella was taken to Leeds Infirmary and had at least fifty-two stitches to patch up 8 gaping wounds in her head. Marcella''s description of her attacker was very similar to that of Tracy Browne.
Police never linked Marcella's attack to the Yorkshire ripper inquiry - only accepting it after Sutcliffe's confession.
Marcella Claxton was to see Peter Sutcliffe again. Marcella was drinking in the Gaiety Public House with friends shortly after her attack when Sutcliffe briefly entered the pub before quickly leaving. He was long gone before she could alert anybody.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsEmily JacksonThe Gaiety Public House is where Yorkshire Ripper Victim Emily Jackson parked her Commer Van in order to 'do business' with her clients. Her husband, Sydney, would often be in the pub whilst Emily plied her trade.
Emily Jackson was found murdered on 21st January 1976. Her body was found in a derelict cul-de-sac off Roundhay Road in Chapeltown. This location was less than half a mile from the Gaiety Public House on Roundhay Road in Leeds.
Marcella ClaxtonIn May 1976 the Gaiety Public House was once again part of the Yorkshire Ripper Inquiry.
After being attacked by Sutcliffe in early May Marcella Claxton was enjoying a night out n the Gaiety Pub when she saw Sutcliffe briefly enter and then leave the pub.
He was gone before she could raise the alarm.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsEmily Jackson, with her husband Sydney's approval, became a sex worker just before Christmas 1975. Sydney & Emily Jackson lived on the outskirts of Morley and had three children. Emily's dip into prostitution was only supposed to be a short term arrangement to get through some financial difficulties.
The Jackson's were owners of a Commer van. The van was usually parked in the corner of the Gaiety Public House, which was in the heart of Chapeltown. Emily Jackson took her customers back to the van whilst Sydney waited in the pub.
On the evening of Tuesday, 20th January 1976, the Commer van was parked in the Gaiety pub car park as usual. Emily didn't return to the pub by closing time so Sydney took a taxi home, leaving the Commer van in the car park so Emily could drive home.
At just after 8 am the next day, 21st January 1976, Emily’s mutilated body was found in a derelict cul de sac off Roundhay Road by a worker on early shift. It was less than half a mile from the Gaiety Public House.
The police found a boot impression on the right thigh of Emily Jackson. The boot was later identified as aDunlop Warwick size 7 or 8.
The murder of Emily Jackson was almost instantly matched to the murder of Wilma McCann.
The following message was sent out from Millgarth police station – the headquarters of Leeds CID:
FROM THE ACC NUMBER 2 AREA WEST YORKS METRO POLICE TO ALL DIVS [DIVISIONS] WEST YORKS, ALL SURROUNDING FORCES, POLICE GAZETTE AND POLICE REPORTS. THE BODY OF EMILY MONICA JACKSON, 42 YEARS, HOME ADDRESS 18 BACK GREEN, CHURWELL, WAS FOUND IN A DERELICT BUILDING IN MANOR STREET, LEEDS 7, AT 8.05 AM TODAY 21ST JANUARY 1976. IT IS KNOWN THAT THE WOMAN HAS RECENTLY BEEN AN ACTIVE PROSTITUTE IN THE CHAPELTOWN AREA OF LEEDS … THE DECEASED SUFFERED SEVERE INJURIES TO THE CHEST, ABDOMEN, AND THROAT, POSSIBLY CAUSED BY AN INSTRUMENT SIMILAR TO A PHILIPS SCREWDRIVER (CROSS PATTERN TYPE). ASSAILANT MAY BE HEAVILY BLOODSTAINED AND IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN WEARING HEAVY RIBBED RUBBER BOOTS OR HEAVY WELLINGTON BOOTS. THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN NO SEXUAL INTERFERENCE TO THE VAGINA THE BRA WAS MOVED TO POSITION ABOVE THE DRESS AND THERE ARE SEVERAL INDICATIONS THAT THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS CRIME MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF THE PROSTITUTE WILMA MCCANN AT LEEDS ON 29/30TH OCTOBER 1975. MOTIVE APPEARS TO BE HATRED OF PROSTITUTES … A SEARCH OF RECORDS FOR PERSONS CONVICTED OF SERIOUS ATTACKS UPON PROSTITUTES WOULD BE APPRECIATED …
Sutcliffe's Confession
Peter Sutcliffe described the murder of Emily in detail in his confession: (* Spelling mistakes & grammar are left as per the original statements).
Sutcliffe said:
"I wanted to do what I'd got in mind as soon as possible. I remember turning on the ignition again so that the red warning light came on and pretended that the car would not start I said I would have to lift up the bonnet to sort it out. I asked her if she would give me a hand. We both got out of the car I lifted up the bonnet of the car. I had picked up a hammer which I had put near my seat for that purpose.
"I told her I could not see properly without a torch. She offered to use her cigarette lighter to shine under the bonnet. She was holding her lighter like this I took a couple of steps back and I hit her over the head with the hammer I think I hit her twice she fell down onto the road.
"I took hold of her hands or wrists and pulled her into a yard which had rubbish in I then made sure she was dead by taking a screwdriver and stabbing her repeatedly. I pulled her dress up and her bra before I stabbed her to make it easier. To be truthfull I pulled her cloths up in order to satisfy some sort of sexual revenge on her as on reflection I had done on McCANN.
I stabbed her frenziedly without thought with a Phillips screwdriver all over her body. I had taken the screwdriver with the hammer in the well of the driving seat. I was seething with hate for her."
