Rosemary Stead - A possible Yorkshire Ripper victim |

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsRosemary Stead was an eighteen-year-old shop worker working for Sandmartin Supermarket in Wakefield Road, Bradford.
On the evening of Wednesday, 6th January 1976, Rosemary Stead left the Supermarket slightly later than usual and missed her bus home.
Rosemary reached the small village of Queensbury which is on the moors at approximately 6.30 pm. It was after dark. As she was walking Rosemary was viciously struck from behind with a blunt object. Rosemary was unconscious when her attacker made of. The attack was witnessed by pedestrians and drivers.
The attacker was described as:
- Twenty-five to thirty years old;
- Five feet nine inches tall;
- Slim build;
- With dark hair;
- Moustache and beard;
Analysis in recent years suggest that this case should have been linked with the earlier attacks on Anna Rogulskyj and Tracy Browne.
There were conversations surrounding the similarity of Rosemary's attack to that of Wilma McCann.
Because Rosemary Stead was a shop worker, and not a sex worker, this case remained unlinked to other attacks.

Wilma McCann - Yorkshire Ripper Victim |

On 29th October 1975 Wilma McCann left her four children at home in her council house on Scott Hall Avenue and headed for Chapeltown for a night out.
It wasn't unusual for Wilma McCann to leave her children at home as her eldest child acted as babysitter.
At approximately 1.30am on the following morning, 30th October, an intoxicated Wilma McCann started to make her way home. Sadly, she never made it.
At 5am, one of Wilma's neighbours found her eldest two children huddled together at a bus stop. The children were said to be cold, confused and frightened. They were crying as their mummy hadn’t come home.
At 11am a milkman found Wilma McCann’s body, sprawled face upwards on the sloping grass embankment of Prince Philip Playing Fields off Scott Hall Road.
Wilma's body was found just a hundred yards from home. The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, had struck her twice on the back of the head with a hammer. Sutcliffe had followed this by stabbing her at least fifteen times.
Sutcliffe had pulled down her trousers as well as tearing her blouse open.
The post-mortem revealed that the stab wounds to her neck, chest and abdomen were inflicted after death.
The investigation also showed that Sutcliffe had also masturbated over Wilma leaving semen on her trousers and panties.
Examination of the semen revealed that the attacker was of the rare type B blood group. Unfortunately, further tests revealed that Sutcliffe was a ‘non-secretor’. This could mean that the semen found at the crime scene would not match the attacker.
Up to 150 police officers took 11,000 interviews and put in 53,000 hours, but Detective Chief Superintendent Dennis Hoban and his team were unable to identify Wilma McCann’s killer.

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsDetective Superintendent Jim Hobson was the Head of CID in Leeds at the time of Tracy Browne's vicious attack on On Wednesday, 27 August, 1975.
Detective Chief Superintendent Hobson, who had replaced Chief Superintendent Hoban in the Eastern Crime Area, investigated the murder of Irene Richardson.
The incident room was established at Millgarth Police Station, Leeds.
On the 20th August 1980 Marguerite Walls, a 47 year old civil servant, was murdered by Peter Sutcliffe as she walked home in Leeds. She was struck on the head, knocked down and then strangled with a piece of cord. Her body was stripped, indecently assaulted and hidden under a pile of grass cuttings in the grounds of a large house. This case was not initially linked to Peter Sutcliffe.
Detective Chief Superintendent Hobson assumed responsibility for the inquiry and set up an incident room at Pudsey Police Station.

Anna Rogulskyj - Yorkshire Ripper Victim |

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsAnna Patricia Rogulskyj, was a slim, blonde, Irish woman from Keighley.
Anna married Roman, a Ukrainian, in 1957. Unfortunately they went on to divorce in 1973.
On Friday, 4 July 1975, Anna had argued with her current boyfriend, Geoffrey Hughes, so Anna travelled to Bradford for a night out.
At approximately midnight Anna headed back to Keighley. It is understood she hitchhiked from Bradford to Keighley.
Upon arriving home Anna found that Geoff had taken his belongings and left.
At around 2 am, Anna decided to go to Geoff’s house. As she was on her way a man’s voice called out to Anna asking if she “fancied it”.
Anna Rogulskyj wasn’t a prostitute and turned down the offer.
By the time Anna arrived at Geoff Hughes’ house he was out, so Anna started to head home. On the way home Anna was accosted by the same man asking once again if she “fancied it”.
As Anna made her way past the man she was brutally struck three times on the back of the head with a ball-peen hammer.
The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, pulled down her panties, pulled up her blouse and slashed her exposed stomach with a knife.
Sutcliffe was disturbed by a neighbour – he rearranged Anna’s clothes and made off.
Fortunately, at 2.20 am, Anna was found and rushed to hospital. Some hours of emergency surgery saved Anna’s life.

Did Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, kill Gordon Snowden? |

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsAt around 2am on Easter Monday 1979, 60 year-old Gordon Snowden was brutally attacked.
He was found beside his kiosk with severe injuries to the head.
Mr Snowden was working his shift as a petrol pump attendant at Sutton Bridge Motors in Lincolnshire.
A cash till had been stolen during the attack and has never been traced.
A Citroen 2CV car was seen on the garage forecourt shortly before the murder - but this line on inquiry was not fruitful.
Gordon Snowden later died in hospital.
Nobody has been charged with his murder.
Ex-police intelligence officer Chris Clark believes that Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, attacked Gordon Snowden, as well as three other men.
Mr Clark thinks Sutcliffe killed bookmaker Fred Craven in 1966, attacked taxi driver John Tomey in 1967, and killed cemetery gardener George Ellis in 1967.

Did Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, attack John Tomey? |

Yorkshire Ripper ForumsOn Wednesday, 22 March 1967, taxi driver John Tomey picked up a passenger in Leeds City Centre. The passenger was said to be wearing a zipped beige-coloured jacket, jeans and a green and white college scarf.
Mr Tomey said that his passenger had dark hair, a moustache and a beard and that he was definitely a local man.
Mr Tomey recalls the passenger requesting to go Bradford first, but then changing his mind and asking to be taken to Bingley.
John Tomey found himself lost on Cockhill Moor. As he stopped to consult his map the passenger attacked him with a hammer. Mr Tomey lost consciousness for a short period but noticed the passenger trying to open the driver's door. He managed to drive off in the car.
Mr Tomey stopped at a cottage and asked the occupier to call the police.
Mt Tomey's injuries would mean that he would never drive his taxi again. His skull had ben severely fractured.
Mr Tomey's attack was only linked to the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, in 1981.
Peter Sutcliffe has denied ever attacking or killing any men. Sutcliffe denies attacking John Tomey and Fred Craven.
Mr Tomey is 100% certain that Sutcliffe was his attacker and said the following in an article with the Daily Mirror:
“I’ve come through bloody hell and I want to see him and ask, ‘Why me?’
“He will decline because he’s such a coward. I’m sure of it. But before we die, I’d like to come face-to-face with him.
“He just wants to torture me by denying this. I know he was my attacker.”
Ex-police intelligence officer Chris Clark believes that Sutcliffe attacked John Tomey as well as three other men.
Mr Clark thinks Sutcliffe killed bookmaker Fred Craven in 1966, filling station worker Gordon Snowdon in 1979, and cemetery gardener George Ellis in 1967.
Mr Clark explains more in his book: Yorkshire Ripper - The Secret Murders by John Blake Publishing.

Fred Craven had a congenital spinal disability – leaving him standing at around four feet seven tall. Doctors had assumed that Fred wouldn't live past the age of 21.
Fred Craven was married with four children. Unfortunately his wife left him when their eldest child was just fourteen. He continued to raise them on his own.
Fred Craven was a ‘commission agent’ – a bookie who provided a personalised service for punters. He had a small office on Wellington Road above an antiques shop.
On 22nd April, 1966, Fred Craven visited his office to pick up some paperwork. The time was shortly before 11am. Fred was followed into his office by tow unknown attackers. He suffered head wounds from a blunt instrument and rib injuries from bring kicked. His wallet was stolen which contained around £200.
The detectives assigned to the case would soon become household names during the Yorkshire Ripper Inquiry.
The police investigation was led by Detective Superintendent George Oldfield and Detective Sergeant Dick Holland
It wasn't long cefore the police turned up at the Sutcliffe residence at 57 Cornwall Road. They arrested Michael Sutcliffe, Peter’s sixteen-year-old brother, as he fitted the description of one of Craven's attackers. Michael Sutcliffe was released after two day's questioning as he had a strong alibi.
Afetr the trail went cold the case was categorised as an unsolved crime in the West Riding Constabulary files. Nobody could have guessed that Fifteen years later the Fred Craven murder would be associated with the Yorkshire Ripper.

Former Northamptonshire policeman Paul Harrison has had his latest book 'Mind Games' taken out of circulation by publisher Urbane Publications.
Paul Harrison has long been considered a leading expert on serial killers. He is a world-wide name and has written books on Ted Bundy, the Kray twins and Charles Manson. Martina Cole has even described him as 'the master of the true crime genre'.
Paul Harrison has previously claimed that he has interviewed some of the world's most notorious serial killers, which includes the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, and that he has acted as a profiler for the FBI.
Reports are suggesting that Former staff at the FBI have revealed they have never met him.
It is also being widely reported that Peter Sutcliffe penned a letter ranting: 'Paul Harrison is an absolute charlatan, a conman. He never corresponded with me, nor did he ever visit me. He needs to be exposed for the downright liar he is!'
The Daily Mail also details a Facebook post allegedly made by Paul Harrison as saying:
'It seems I've let everyone down, I'm sorry for that. This monster is no longer mine, nor is it what I wanted it to be.
'I saw it as a tool to give victims a voice, everywhere, but because I'm weak and vulnerable and utterly useless at decision making I was introduced into sensationalising events by promoters who often sent out misleading blurb. Something I had to live up to. I've decided to call it a day for now. No more shows or interaction on social media'.
The post has since been removed.
The Manchester Crime Club group on Facebook, who Mr Harrison has strong links with, has suggested that Mr Harrison is currently ill.
Harrison's publishers Urbane have published the following statement on their website:
To our readers
You may have seen the article on the Sun website (12th July) calling into question the veracity of Paul Harrison’s claim to be an experienced criminal profiler. Like everyone who worked with Paul Harrison, the attendees to his talks and the readers of his books, we are very concerned by these revelations and are currently seeking clarification before deciding what further action to take.
However, with immediate effect we will be withdrawing Mind Games from sale and endeavouring to remove all stock and details from every relevant retail channel. We will also be donating any profits we have secured thus far from the sales of Mind Games to charities that help and support victims of violent crime.
You can read The Sun article here.
