Although having supposedly told her landlady, [http://crimehub.co.uk/index.php?title=Mary_Bousfield Mary Bousfield] in 1888, that her real name was Staples or Stapleton, Martha was actually born Martha White. She was born at [http://crimehub.co.uk/index.php?title=17_Marshall_Street_-_London_Road_-_Southwark 17 Marshall Street, London Road, Southwark ] on 10th May 1849.
Martha was the daughter of Charles Samuel and Elisabeth (née Dowsett) White.
The family are recorded at the same address in the 1851 census. By then Charles Samuel* Martha had four siblings, a warehouseman, had sired five children[http: Henry (aged 13), Esther (11), Stephen (9), Mary Ann (4) and Martha (1)//crimehub.co.
