Leather Apron

During the hunt for Polly Nichols’ killer police learned of a man the Whitechapel prostitutes feared. He was known as "Leather Apron" and he intimidated them. Anybody refusing his demands were beaten.

Police were anxious to locate "Leather Apron" - if only to eliminate him from their inquiries.

"Leather Apron's" real name was Jack Pizer.

The Star was the first publication to mention "Leather Apron". They seem to have put together a description based on accounts from prostitutes and lodging house owners and local tradesmen.

He was described as:

  • A bully of prostitutes
  • A Jewish slipper maker who had abandoned his trade
  • He is five feet four or five inches in height
  • He wears a dark, close-fitting cap
  • He is thickset, and has an unusually thick neck
  • His hair is black, and closely clipped
  • His age is about 38 or 40
  • He has a small, black moustache
  • He wore a leather apron, which he always wears, and from which he gets his nickname

Inspector Abberline concurred in late September that: "there was no evidence to connect him with the murder".
