Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge
Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge (Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth; 27 November 1833 – 27 October 1897) was a member of the British royal family. She was a granddaughter of George III, grandmother of Edward VIII and George VI and great-grandmother of Elizabeth II. She held the title of Duchess of Teck through marriage.
On October 31st, 1888, between the murders of Catherine Eddowes and Mary Kelly, Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge visited the East End, accompanied by the Queen’s oldest daughter, Princess Victoria.
Princess Mary was in the East End for the opening of the King Edward Institute and Schools on Hanbury Street, which was gaily decorated for the occasion.
At the opening ceremony, Samuel Montagu said:
“Her Royal Highness had brought sunshine into Whitechapel at the period of its greatest gloom and depression.”
