Louis Diemschutz sold cheap jewellery in addition to his role as steward of the International Workingmen's Educational Club.
Reports suggest that Diemschutz was arriving home from Westow Hill Market near Crystal Palace on Saturday in the early hours of Saturday, 30th September 1888.
As his cart began to move into Dutfield's Yard, his pony shied toward the left, and, looking down, Diemschutz saw a dark shape lying on the ground to his right, close to the wall of the club.
