In 1888 Joseph and Elizabeth Mahoney were a young married couple. Their lives were documented to have been hard. 

They both resided in 47, George Yard Buildings.

Joseph was employed as a carman. His wife, Elizabeth, worked from nine o’clock in the morning to seven o'clock at night in a match factory at Stratford.
 
On the morning of 7th August 1888 Elizabeth visited a chandler’s shop in nearby Thrawl Street. It is estimated that she returned home at approximately 1.50am. 

On returning home she hadn't noticed anything unusual and the steps in the building were thought to be clear.
